Man stops to help, gets run over on local highway

A deadly vehicle collision this week underscores the danger motorists face when their cars break down and must be steered to the side of the road. Even though drivers are supposed to be cognizant of vehicles in the emergency lane, many tend to drift toward cars along the roadside, rather than clearly avoiding them.

The car accident near Lake Charles also raises questions about the competency of older drivers, an issue that has long been debated throughout the nation's jurisdictions. The suspect in the case is a 91-year-old driver who struck a pedestrian during the late evening hours, when the road was dark and visibility was likely poor.

Motorcycle fatality blamed on blowout

Motorcyclists are naturally in more danger than people riding in cars while traveling our nation's roadways. These individuals are not shielded from the natural elements, and they lack the protection of a vehicle frame. These attributes make riders far more vulnerable to injury even during minor accidents. Major problems, such as a tire blowout, can have even more devastating consequences. That was the suspected cause behind a man's death in late April as he was riding in northern Louisiana.

A man involved in a horrible motorcycle accident last month has died from his injuries, according to official reports. The 42-year-old had been airlifted to local medical facilities with life-threatening injuries after the incident, but he later died at the nearby hospital.

Deadly week for Lafayette drivers, pedestrians

The third week in April was deadly for Louisiana drivers. Several people perished as a result of accidents in Lafayette Parish alone. Two separate traffic accidents in that area resulted in three fatalities late last week, according to officers investigating the crashes. A 33-year-old pedestrian was killed during one of the car accidents. Also, a 52-year-old man and a 54-year-old man perished as a result of an evening crash on Thursday.

The pedestrian accident happened on Friday, when the man was struck by a vehicle during the early morning hours on Johnston Street.

Cell phone law passes first legislative hurdle

Louisiana lawmakers have passed preliminary legislation that would completely prohibit the use of handhold cell phones throughout the state. The new law is aimed at preventing car accidents by prohibiting one form of distracted driving, according to representatives who support the measure.

The proposed legislation would make cell phone usage while driving a secondary offense; that is, officers cannot be stopped for that violation alone, but they may be cited if they are pulled over for another reason. House Bill 787, the document that would change existing Louisiana law, cleared the House Transportation Committee by a vote of nine to seven.

Toyotas recalled for remote-starter problems

A new recall issued by Toyota has bolstered arguments by safety critics that the company does not provide adequate protection for drivers. The recall, which affects Toyota drivers in the Gulf States, is designed to prevent car accidents caused by dashboard light malfunctions.

Drivers in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma have been notified about the recall, which is related to remote starters for the Toyota 4Runner and Sienna models.

Two construction workers hit in less than two weeks

Louisiana law enforcement officials are targeting speeders on a stretch of road where vehicles have hit two construction workers in less than two weeks.

The most recent car accident happened at roughly 5:30 p.m. on March 26, 2012. A 36-year-old construction worker was picking up safety cones along U.S. Highway 425 near Log Cabin, Louisiana. Law enforcement officers report the man turned to cross the road and stepped into the line of traffic.

Guilty plea offers closure for family

The family members of a 23-year-old New Roads, Louisiana, woman killed in an alleged drunk driving accident in 2009 say they are content with the other driver's guilty plea.

The 25-year-old Ventress, Louisiana woman, who was driving the other car involved in the fatal car accident, pleaded no contest to charges of vehicular homicide and first-degree negligent vehicular injuring earlier this month.

Woman convicted of killing toddler arrested for another DWI

According to police reports, the most recent car accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on March 6 on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The woman allegedly crossed the centerline of Airline Highway and had a head-on collision with a tow truck.
